Subject: Business Opportunities for SA: A Shanghai World Expo Report - April 29, Friday

Dear CSSA members and friends,

To further promote San Antonio's international profile and enhance the relationship between San Antonio and China, Mayor Julian Castro and City Council members Elisa Chan, Mary Alice Cisneros, John Clamp and Ray Lopez, led a delegation of more than 70 city and business leaders to Shanghai, China last May to attend the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. As a result of this trip, Mayor Castro signed Friendship City Agreements with the two cities of Wuxi and Suzhou, China. This provided a platform to promote business opportunities and cultural and educational exchanges between San Antonio and China.

You are cordially invited to attend the event Business Opportunities for SA: A Shanghai World Expo Report which will be held this Friday 8:30am-11am. The event will feature Jose Villarreal, the former Commissioner General for the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, who will share his thoughts on the impact of U.S. participation in the World Expo. Councilwoman Chan will also report on the progress of the China Initiative since the signing of the two Friendship Cities agreements. This will be followed by four panelists who will discuss the following topics that will help the community understand the many aspects of doing business with China. Topics to include:

"How to Attract Chinese Investment in San Antonio Real Estate"

Confucius Institute at UTSA will offer Summer 10-Day Chinese Language and Culture Camp on June 13th through June 24th. The programs include Chinese Language Enrichment, Chinese Arts and Crafts, Chinese Painting/Drawing and Chinese Martial Arts.
The following is the tentative daily schedule: (June 13th- June 24th, 10 days, Mon.-Fri. only, no weekends)
9:00am   - 9:50am    Chinese Language Enrichment
10:00am - 10:50am  Chinese Arts and Crafts
10:50am - 11:10am  Snack
11:10am - 12:00pm  Martial Arts / Chinese Drawing (rotates every other day)

Subject: Asia Pacific Heritage Festival, May 14, Saturday

Dear CSSA members and friends,
The Asia Pacific Heritage Festival this year will be held at The Pearl on May 14, SaturdayThis event will promote Asia-Pacific Heritage culture and will also be the last event in a 5-part event series for the SA Hearts Japan Initiative - raising funds for American Red Cross Relief Efforts in Japan.
The event will feature various beautiful dance performances, food, fun and a Children's Arts & Crafts Activity Area graciously hosted by San Antonio Museum of Art. Cost per booth is $100. Booth Purchase Deadline is Friday, May 6. Net proceeds will be donated to American Red Cross. Event admission is FREE!

Subject: CSSA Summer Family Fun Day event - June 11th, Saturday, 11am-4pm

Dear CSSA Members and Friends,
Have you ever visited the beautiful Canyon Lake before? Would you like to join your friends to have a great time there together? The Chinese Society of San Antonio cordially invite you and your family to attend CSSA Summer Family Fun Day event which will be held on June 11th Saturday at Randolph Canyon Lake Recreation Park, 48 miles north of San Antonio.
During the Fun Day, you will have the opportunity to enjoy many exciting activities and games including mini-cruise(boat tour), horseshoe, water balloon toss, hokey pokey, simon says, dancing and live music, etc. You will have a wonderful time with your family and friends!
CSSA will provide free lunches for members. The lunch menu includes beef brisket, chicken, potato salad, fruit and ice tea, etc. Non-members are welcome to join the event for $5/person including the lunch, boat tour and all activities. Participants are also welcome to bring their favorite side dish/desert for themselves or to share.

We need an accurate headcount to prepare the lunches at the event, please register before May 27th.  ID is required (16 and over) at the park entrance. please provide your name when register. All guest names are checked at the park entrance including children.

Subject: Mongolian Horsehead Fiddle Rock Concert - May 27, Friday 7-9pm

Dear CSSA Members and Friends,
To celebrate the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, Confucius Institute at UTSA and San Antonio Chinese Alliance are hosting a Mongolian Horsehead Fiddle Rock Concert on May 27, Friday, 7pm-9pm at Palo Alto College Performing Arts Center.
The concert will feature Super Orient Courser, an award-winning modern Mongolian horsehead fiddle musician ensemble from China. Founded in 2005, the Ensemble made its debut as the Gold Prize winner of the 2007 CCTV China National Folk Music Instrumental Competition. In 2008 they were the guest performers at the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics Sailing Competition. When President Barack Obama made his first state visit to China in November 2009, Super Orient Courser performed for the President at the welcome banquet hosted by the Chinese President Hu Jintao.

Subject: Chinese Landscape Painting Exhibition - May 18-27

Dear CSSA Members and Friends,
The Department of Art and Art History and the Confucius Institute at UTSA are presenting recent work by the esteemed Chinese painter Yaping Xiang who extends traditional Chinese painting themes and techniques with contemporary influences. The exhibition "Xiang Yaping: The Traditional and the Modern in Chinese Landscape Painting" runs May 18-27 in the Arts Building Gallery on the UTSA Main Campus. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
With a masterful array of fluid gesture and detailed investigation, the exhibit of more than 50 works depicts real and fantastic images of landscapes, flowers, insects and birds. The artist learned to paint in his early childhood in Zhengzhou, Henan province.

Xiang is President of the Sheyouzhai Art Research Institute of Chinese Painting, member of the Henan Artists Association, academician at the Dahua Calligraphy and Painting Research Institute of China and a member of the Henan Chinese Painting Association. His work has been included in numerous exhibitions as well as the prestigious National Fine Arts Exhibition.

Subject: Meet the Author: "The Chinese Secret Archives of Gold" - June 7th

Dear CSSA Members and Friends,

Dr. Sing-Yung Wu will visit San Antonio for an academic conference in June and he would like to meet local Chinese friends who are interested in discussing the history in 1949, a critical period for many Chinese.

Dr.Wu is a Medical Professor at UC Irvine. He is also the author of the book "The Chinese Secret Archives of Gold" which covers evidences and details that he has collected over 15 years period: large quantity of gold has been transported to Taiwan, during the Civil War, from Mainland. This stabilized the shaky economy of Taiwan during 1949-1950.

Dr.Wu will present a talk on his book and his findings to the local Chinese friends on June 7th.

During his presentation, Dr.Wu will show many "highly confidential" original secret files from the National Archives, stored originally in 大溪档案. In addition, there are many slides which can only be seen through his presentation/book.

Dr.Wu will be presenting the information in Chinese entirely. The presentation will last about 50 minutes to one hour followed by a question and answer session.
